Teaching Sustainability: Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

Description
This workshop empowers university educators to integrate sustainability into their teaching practices, aligning with UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) framework (UNESCO, 2020). Participants will learn how to foster critical thinking, systems thinking, and participatory approaches in their courses. The workshop highlights cutting-edge pedagogical practices, including problem-based learning, interdisciplinary teaching, and using digital tools to model complex sustainability challenges (e.g., Sterling, 2021; Wiek et al., 2011).
Learning Goals
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
(1) Understand the principles and goals of Education for Sustainable Development.
(2) Explore interdisciplinary and participatory teaching strategies for sustainability.
(3) Design activities and curricula that promote sustainability competencies.
(4) Reflect on their role in shaping learners’ attitudes and behaviors toward sustainability.
