Taming the Content Monster - How to Reduce Content Coverage and Make Space for Student Learning in Our Courses
Content
University courses attempt to cover all the material deemed important or interesting to a particular topic. And over time, new publications and advances in the field mean we keep adding to the "content monster." Focusing on coverage often leaves little time for active learning, which evidence shows to improve student concentration, depth of understanding, and recall. In this workshop we will take a look at the content of participants’ current (or planned) course syllabi, identify critical themes, and discuss strategies for organizing course content for better comprehension by students. Our goal is to align course content and ideal course learning outcomes while reduing the overall amount of content in order to make more space for active student learning and evidence-based instructional practices.
